Muhyiddin's RM432m Jana Wibawa trial begins in March

The Kuala Lumpur High Court has fixed 29 days in 2026 to hear Muhyiddin Yassin’s Jana Wibawa-linked corruption cases.

They are March 9-11, April 13, 16, 28, and 29, May 25 and 26, July 6-10, 13-17, and 27-29, as well as Aug 17-21, 26, and 27.

The dates were fixed at today’s case management before judge Noor Ruwena Nordin this morning, as confirmed by Muhyiddin’s counsels, K Kumaraendran and Chetan Jethwani, when contacted by Malaysiakini today.

Chetan also said the court will hear Muhyiddin’s application to temporarily retrieve his passport next Tuesday (Nov 18).

“We filed an application to temporarily retrieve (Muhyiddin’s) passport last Thursday. The application would be heard on Nov 18.”

Case background

Muhyiddin, 78, claimed trial in March 2023 to four counts of abuse of power under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009 and three additional counts of money laundering under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

The charges are linked to the Jana Wibawa programme, introduced during his tenure as the prime minister between 2020 and 2021.

Under the abuse of power charges, he was accused of using his position as then-prime minister and Bersatu president to solicit RM232.5 million from three companies and an individual between March 1, 2020 and Aug 20, 2021.

The three companies are Bukhary Equity, Nepturis Sdn Bhd, and Mamfor Sdn Bhd, while the individual in question is Azman Yusoff.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court had quashed his power abuse charges in August 2023, after finding the charges were defective and did not disclose particulars for Muhyiddin to mount a proper defence.

The Court of Appeal then reversed the ruling in February 2024 and dismissed Muhyiddin’s application to review its decision in the same year.

For the three money laundering charges, Muhyiddin was accused of using his position as Bersatu’s president to receive RM200 million from Bukhary Equity between Feb 25, 2021 and July 8, 2022.
